According to several interviews, the Cast author s chose the spelling of 'Vampyre' simply because it looked edgy and would be cool to use in books. There's no special significance or anything. It's quite common for people to ascribe one meaning to one spelling and the other meaning to the other spelling, but that's more an attempt to invent some sort of sense than a reflection of any exclusively accepted use of the words. There's a Wiccan synth-Goth band called "Inkubus Sukkubus" that uses the spelling "Vampyre" consistently, just because they always go for the funkiest spelling available wytches, vampyres, sukkubi, magick, etc And I've read quite a bit about "vampire" subculture from people who spell it the standard way.
