She has been shown as being very afraid of losing her mortal friends and family in Reality Check's writings, alicorns are eternally-lived and was overjoyed at Twilight Sparkle's ascension to becoming an alicorn.
In MaskedPony's stories, Nyx is shown as a hero figure to Equestria, since she is the new holder of the Equestrian Emeralds. Nyx, despite being Twilight's adoptive daughter, also appears to have a adoptive father, Lunar Eclipse, the long lost son of Luna who went rogue and disappeared for years after being blessed from Dark Shadow, a space dragon who became her friend and has mysterious powers, Tex, a friend who has a strange ability, Glowing Aurora, and a sister who is created from her own blood by another cult, and protective of Nyx's safety, Dark Nyx.
Nyx also shows that her relationship to her friends, Twilight's friends, and her newly godmother, Rainbow Dash has grown over the years she's been living in Ponyville. In The Infinite Loops a series in which most universes have a section of time repeating; in MLP's case, the events depicted in the series, starting with seasons and later expanding as additional material was released , Nyx first appeared in a variant Loop based off the events of Past Sins. When the Loop ended and a new one began, Twilight was heartbroken at the loss of her daughter, and informed her friends of what had happened, asking them to handle anything that came up that Loop while she mourned.
Fortunately, an Admin activated Nyx as a Looper, specifically as a manifestation of the powers that turned Luna into Nightmare Moon, and she split off from Luna at the start of the Loop. Confused by the sudden turn of events, Nyx decided to prank Ponyville by appearing in her adult form at the Summer Sun Celebration.
When the sudden arrival of five of the Element Bearers and Luna led to her reverting to her filly form, Rarity realized what had happened and sent Rainbow Dash to get Twilight, resulting in a joyful reunion between the two. Nyx has appeared in the Loops on a semi-regular basis since then, sometimes splitting off from Luna when she Awakens, sometimes forming from the Pony of Shadows after the expansion that added that episode to the Loops and sometimes just on her own.
Anchors, the beings who stabilize a given Loop, must also be mentally stable, and when Fluttershy raised Russ during a Fused Loop with his universe, her influence made him a viable candidate for the position. More recently, she has begun spending more time bonding with Luna after realizing she was neglecting her other "parent" in favor of Twilight. What begins as a way to see if Nyx was really Nightmare Moon, Twilight soon grows to care for Nyx and decides to adopt her as her own.
She's very overprotective of Nyx, like when she disguised Nyx to avoid anyone quickly judging her as Nightmare Moon. Even when in her Nightmare Moon form, Twilight still loves Nyx with all her heart and adamantly believes Nyx is still a good pony unconditionally inside. When Nyx becomes a filly once more, she has adventures with her adopted mother in the fanfics they are featured in.

We can poke fun at a lot of the early stories because much like how the world got obsessed with the likes of Jeff the Killer, his story wasn't that good.
While we remember him, he doesn't hold up to other, better written characters. This may or may not be the case for Nyx, but what I'm relatively certain on is that she was a product of her time, and bigger and better thigns have certainly come along.
I think we all have to face this with something we hold dearly at some point. I definitely remember loving Past Sins. But then I got older and realized a lot of the flaws it has.
Who's this "Nyx" you speak of? Best pony! I unfortunately missed the heyday of Nyx. I had run across her before, very briefly. See a random fanart one day, then maybe a few months later hear about some popular fanfic where Twilight takes in a little filly, possibly adopting her, things like that.
I never gave it a second thought until I decided to pick up Past Sins and read it one fateful day 11 months ago. I'm a bit saddened that I never knew about her when she was popular, but I'm glad I did eventually run across her story. I tend to avoid putting OCs in my rankings for favorite characters, favorite villains, favorite background characters, etc. Show me these people, I need to have a serious word with them.
I'll say this, Past Sins isn't the best written book out there, it's story isn't perfect, and maybe other OCs might be written better.
That said, it's still my favorite fanfic I've ever read, it's close to my favorite book in general that I've read, and it's better quality than most popular books out there by professional authors. In this version of events, however, there were five siblings, as in all the Crusaders who had already begun Looping and Ascended the four having done so only a few Loops prior to that. The Loop began in an uncomfortable way for Nyx, in that all five Awoke in a massive pony pile-up on top of her.
With Twilight Sparkle busy doing massive amounts of paperwork, all five decided to reign in her stead. For her next Loop, Nyx wound up in the magical land of Oz, replacing the young girl named Dorothy. Since Nyx lacked the girl's desire to return to Kansas, she and the Crusaders, who were replacing Dorothy's companions, decided to assist Trixie in curtailing the threats of that Loop instead. Nyx was Awake and present for the Equestria Foam Sword War, having been travelling Equestria with her mother, who had been replacing Trixie.
